Associate Professorship, English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a relatively new field in Norway. Oslo and Akershus

University of Applied Sciences (HiOA) is extending its current EAP capability with one Associate Professorship.

Learning Center and Library

The EAP unit is organized within HiOA’s Learning Centre and Library.  Our main role is to support the current institutional strategy of promoting, enabling and expanding the international research activity of its staff, as well as functioning as a unit of expertise in multilingual teaching and learning in higher education.  Additionally, we are responsible for carrying out research related to our activities.   The EAP unit is currently involved in developing a Unit for Academic Language and Practice in collaboration with HiOA’s Learning Support Unit and the Diversity in Pedagogical Practices Unit. 

Main duties of the position 

The new staff member will be responsible for developing the EAP teaching and research portfolio in the fields of EMI and CLIL. He or she will also be expected to carry out research on multilingual communicative competence in higher education in Norway and internationally.

Tasks include:

  • Teaching faculty and teaching at doctoral, postgraduate and some undergraduate levels in topics related to written and oral communication in higher education settings
  • Developing EAP’s portfolio with EMI and CLIL initiatives at HiOA
  • developing and holding workshops and seminars for academic staff in our own and other institutions of higher education
  • Carrying out research on multilingual communication and practices in higher education in Norway and internationally
  • Contributing actively to the development of the proposed Unit for Academic Language and Practice

We are looking for applicants who have

  • PhD in applied linguistics with particular emphasis on written and/or oral academic- and professional discourse and communication in multilingual settings in higher education
  • Teaching and research experience with CLIL and EMI in higher education settings
  • Advanced EAP expertise in higher education settings
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills and Norwegian or other Scandinavian language skills

It is an advantage if you also have

  • Expertise and experience in working with faculty and students from varied linguistic, cultural, educational and professional backgrounds
  • Experience in project management and strategic development
  • Flexibility, excellent collaborative skills and the ability to communicate across disciplines
  • EAP teaching experience across a range of disciplines
  • An interest in digital teaching and learning in higher education and innovative curriculum Development

HiOA tests educational qualifications for the position as Associate Professor in connection with interviews. General criteria for appointment of a position as Associate Professor are stipulated in Section 1-2 of the Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions (Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts. See details in Norwegian.

Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete HiOA’s program for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years.

In addition to interviews, testing and a trial teaching session will be a part of the application process.

Expert evaluation

Applicants will be assessed by an Expert Committee. You must upload the following documents together with your application by the final date for applications:

  • CV, references and all pages of certificates/diplomas
  • list of scholarly works
  • up to 10 scholarly works, including your PhD thesis.

You must upload all of these documents. The documents must be in either English or a Scandinavian language. Translations must be government authorised. Originals must be presented if you are invited for an interview. HiOA performs document inspections in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for state employees, Associate Professor and position code 1011. Salary NOK 482 800 – 613 500 per year. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants.
