Aarhus School of Architecture invites applications for a professorship with special responsibilities (MSO) for managing and developing further our PhD school and strengthening the field of research by design.
The MSO professor will be responsible for developing and leading The PhD School as a strong, visionary and well-functioning unit for training researchers. Another responsibility of the MSO professor will be to strengthen and raise the profile of research by design as a design and practice-based field of research.
At Aarhus School of Architecture we work with a broad field of research, ranging from scientifically founded research over research by design to artistic research [Knowledge foundation.pdf]. Our doctoral training must be able to engage with this range through a nuanced doctoral training programme.
The MSO professor will be day-to-day manager of The PhD School and must ensure that it provides both a framework for the research of our PhD fellows and develops and provides courses and other academic activities for the PhD programme. The PhD school is a collaboration between Aarhus School of Architecture and Design School Kolding. The PhD School’s management and administration are anchored at Aarhus School of Architecture. We currently have a total of 27 PhD fellows (see a description of The PhD School at here and the history of the PhD School here). We attach importance to The PhD School being an active, stimulating and academically and professionally strong framework for the research of our PhD fellows, to The PhD school providing doctoral training at the highest level, and to The PhD School having a distinct profile and position - within the school as well as externally.
In recent years, Aarhus School of Architecture has had a special focus on research by design as a research methodology, and The PhD School engages actively in international networks and cooperation within the field. With these efforts, Aarhus School of Architecture wishes to emphasise the development of research that is in close dialogue with the design methods, tools and processes of the discipline of architecture.
We advertise this MSO professorship because we wish to continue developing, strengthening, and raising the profile of research by design as a design and practice-based field of research. We attach importance to research by design becoming an important and active component - at The PhD School as well as across the school's other research communities. We also want to strengthen the field in terms of external collaborations with the practice of the discipline - where we see a potential in bringing the field into play both as a catalyst and as an element that can bridge the gap between research and practice.
We expect the applicant to have substantial research competencies within research by design and/or artistic research and experience from research management, preferably within the PhD area. The position comprises both research and teaching. We expect the teaching part of the position to be primarily aimed at The PhD School. It might, however, also involve the school's other teaching and research communities, e.g. in relation to teaching theory and methods. In relation to the research part, the applicant will be given research time for doing research within the field of research by design.
The position is open from 1 January 2020 and we would like the position filled from or shortly after this date. Remuneration will be in accordance with the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC-fællesoverenskomsten).
The MSO professorship is a fixed-term, five-year position on a full-time basis. Aarhus School of Architecture seeks an MSO professor who has carried out internationally recognised research or development work, who has relevant teaching experience, good cooperative and pedagogical skills, and a relevant international network. We are looking for a committed professional who has clear visions for research and doctoral training in relation to architecture and design and, preferably, new and innovative approaches to doctoral training and research by design. We expect applicants to have significant original scientific production at an international level or to have carried out artistic research at the highest international level.
In the application, we ask applicants to describe their visions for developing The PhD School and how this would be implemented over the next five years. The vision should include reflections on the profile, content, and role of The PhD School - internally at Aarhus School of Architecture and externally in relation to other research institutions, the practice of the discipline, etc. We also ask applicants to give an account of their thoughts on developing, strengthening and raising the profile of research by design, and on how this field would be of importance to The PhD School and the school's research landscape in general. We also ask applicants to give an account of their thoughts on a research project of their own within research by design and describe the role of the project in relation to strengthening the field.
