Due to an upcoming retirement, the Biogeoscience group within the Geological Institute, Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich is seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee laboratory facilities and instrumentation and facilitate research activities. The Biogeoscience group is led by Prof. Timothy Eglinton and currently supports two scientific staff, 2 technical staff, 4 postdoctoral scientists, 7 doctoral candidates, and also hosts several Masters students, visiting students and scientists on a frequent basis.
The Biogeoscience laboratories are equipped with diverse state-of-the-art facilities for organic geochemical analysis including equipment for pre-treatment, solvent extraction, hydrolysis and wet chemical processing of samples, analytical and preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled with an array of detectors and analyzers including organic and isotopic mass spectrometry.
Interested applicants should have a minimum of a MSc degree in Chemistry, Earth or Environmental Sciences, and ideally have additional experience that demonstrates strong technical and interpersonal skills for working in a team-oriented environment. Familiarity with safety procedures, analytical protocols and instrumental methods relevant to organic geochemistry, and knowledge of computer interfaces and software for common analytical instrumental manufacturers (e.g., Agilent, Thermo Scientific) is essential. Experience in fieldwork (on land and in the ocean) is desirable. In addition to maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation, the position requires aptitude in methods development, communication of safe laboratory protocols, and training and oversight of new group members and visiting students and scientists.
The Biogeoscience group, and ETH as a whole, is a highly international environment where English is essential as a common language of communication within and between group members. Fluency in German is highly desirable for interactions with ETH workshop staff, purchasing departments, administrative staff, and sales and technical staff of vendors.
The start date for the position is negotiable, but is available from January 1, 2021, initially at a level of 60-80% to permit overlap with the existing laboratory manager. It can then rise to 100% by May 1, 2021, and would be of a minimum duration of approximately 4 years (until June, 2025). Further employment is possible beyond this time depending on circumstances.
