Job description

Canine degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurodegenerative spinal cord disorder, characterized by paraparesis and ataxia that gradually evolves to complete paralysis if the patient survives long enough. This disorder is caused by mutations in the SOD1 gene, but…

Why do some dogs get clinical symptoms and others don’t? Why do some dogs get it at a young age and others when they are old? What is the difference with the normal aging process?

These and other questions will be answered in this project where : (epi)genetics and precision medicine meet neurology

This project is performed at the Laboratory of Animal Genetics (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University), in close collaboration with the Small Animal Department at the same Faculty. Other ongoing research projects at the Laboratory of Animal Genetics are diverse and range from the identification of new disease-causing mutations to the development of novel methods for (epi)genetic research.

Profile of the candidate

The candidate should:

• at least speak Dutch and/or fluent English. 
• hold a degree of Master in (Veterinary) Medicine/Biomedical Sciences/Bio-engineer/Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Bio-informatics.
• preferably have programming skills or be highly motivated to develop them.
