Professor/Associate Professor in Marin Ecology

Professor/Associate Professor in Marin Ecology

The University of Agder (UiA) invites applications for a full-time, permanent position as Professor/Associate Professor in marine ecology at the Department of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Science. The position will mainly be located at Campus Kristiansand, Norway, but the office location can be relocated within the Agder region depending on the business sector’s needs. The starting date is negotiable with the faculty.

The Department of Natural Sciences presently has research groups in ecology and biomedicine. The position is part of the Department’s strategy to establish a research group in marine ecology. Research will be conducted largely in cooperation with commercial aquaculture and fisheries companies in Agder as well as with the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), the Norwegian Institute for Water research (NIVA) and the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo.

The position

The position will focus on solutions to over-exploitation of marine populations, large- and small-scale restoration of marine ecosystems and populations, as well as ecosystem productivity for future human livelihood from marine resources. This requires an understanding of the spatial and temporal variability of marine populations, coastal ecology, evolutionary questions and human impact. The candidates thus must demonstrate the ability to deal with quantitative marine ecology and possess strong statistical skills as well as documented communication skills in relation to laymen and business sector. We expect candidates who are productive in their ability to publish in international peer reviewed journals as well as documented skills in applied research, commercialization and upscaling from research level to commercial scale applications. This is to see not only the publication impact, but also the real-world impact of the research.

Requirements

It is expected that the new colleague has a successful record in providing external funding, especially private funding from the business sector, and the will to work with colleagues in developing the marine research group at UiA further. The candidates are also expected to take part in teaching and supervision of students, introduce them to interaction and experimental work in the industry and to further develop the marine part of the newly established joint master’s programme in aquatic ecology.

Information about the appointment criteria for a position as Professor/Associate Professor can be found in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts.

The position place great demands on the applicant’s capacity for independent goal-oriented work. Applicants will be assessed based on academic background and results, attainment, and previous research and development work. Relevant practical experience, personal suitability and good teamwork skills will also be emphasised.

The successful applicants must document teaching experience in marine ecology. A high level of proficiency in spoken and written English is required.

Applicants who do not speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are expected to acquire the necessary proficiency to lecture in Norwegian.

The University of Agder offers Norwegian language courses to international employees with little or no knowledge of Norwegian. Permanent employees are expected to acquire good command of oral and written Norwegian within a period of two years. This is to be documented by passing the Bergenstest with a score of 450 points.

The University of Agder’s Appointments Committee makes appointments for teaching and research positions. A full-time position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1013 Professor, NOK 623 900-910 900 gross per year, code 1011 Associate Professor, NOK 490 900-650 200 gross per year. In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
