This project aims to characterize Pickering emulsions (PEs) designed to encapsulate, protect and improve the oral bioavailability of oxidation-sensitive active ingredients such as cannabidiol (CBD). Preliminary work has made it possible to prepare EPs based on compounds of natural origin: protein/polyphenol particles whose composition has been chosen to display specific antioxidant properties, and oils of pharmaceutical interest whose composition can modulate the route of absorption of the active ingredient by the oral route (favoring lymphatic absorption to avoid the first hepatic passage).
The person recruited will be in charge of characterizing interactions between particle constituents, as well as verifying the protection of oils and active ingredients against oxidation. The characterization of EPs for oral use (in vitro digestion, cytocompatibility and modulation of active ingredient absorption in a cellular model of the intestinal barrier) will also be carried out. Depending on progress, a preliminary study of the feasibility of producing EPs in a microfluidic system will be carried out.
To complement the skills of the people already involved in the project, the person recruited should preferably have experience in characterizing proteins, antioxidants and/or evaluating active ingredients or formulations in cellular models. Experience in formulation or process engineering would be a plus. Given the transdisciplinary nature of the project, initial training as a pharmacist would be highly appreciated.
The project is being carried out under the responsibility of researchers working in the field and belonging to the CITHEFOR research unit (project leader: Dr Marianne Parent) and the LRGP research unit (Pr Véronique Sadtler, Dr Thilbault Roques-Carmes).
This 12-months position will be based at the UR 3452 CITHEFOR (Campus Brabois Santé: 9 avenue de la Forêt de Haye, Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy), with occasional meetings to the UMR CNRS 7274 LRGP (ENSIC: 1, rue Grandville, Nancy).
The target start date for the position is July 2024, with some flexibility on the exact start date.
