Senior Scientist / Research Scientist, Photonics Integration and Packaging

We are looking for a Senior Scientist or Research Scientist to join our Photonics and RF Integration team located in Oulu

As a researcher, your key goals are to advance our photonics module technologies for various connectivity and sensing devices. You will plan and carry out research work, publish and disseminate research results, and guide younger researchers and process technicians. You will have a proactive role in communicating with our customer companies and research partners as well as in applying for research funding in collaboration with your VTT colleagues and your networks. You will also manage different kinds of customer contracts and public-funded research projects.

We are building functional photonics modules from bare die devices by applying advanced electronics and photonics assembly and packaging processes in our cleanroom facility. The application sectors for the devices include communications, medical, manufacturing, defense and space. Today we are for instance developing photonics integrated circuit (PIC) based devices for communications and quantum photonic sensors for medical imaging. The module-level integration of photonics is a multidisciplinary research topic that involves optics, optoelectronics, electronics, mechanics, high-precision assembly, and thermal management. It deals with silicon and compound semiconductor chips, ceramic substrates, PCBs, flip-chip and other hybrid integration methods, large-area integration on polymer substrates, optical fibers, lasers, and hermetic sealing, etc.

Your responsibilities as a Senior / Research Scientist:

• Designing integration and packaging structures and processes for novel photonic devices
• Planning assembly, packaging and testing experiments, possibly contributing the implementation of the experiments, and analyzing the results, together with your colleagues
• Communicating and solving problems with colleagues at VTT and with external partners 
• Communicating work plans and research results in project meetings and by written reports
• Publishing research results by authoring or co-authoring scientific papers and conference presentations, and in other kinds of events and publications
• Preparation of research funding proposals and contributing the preparations of project offers to our customers
• Managing research projects

Who are we looking for:

• A person with experience and interests in photonics devices and their packaging technologies
• MSc or preferably doctoral degree in photonics, electronics, physics, or other relevant discipline
• Several years of work experience in photonics or electronics manufacturing or packaging technologies or on photonics devices
• We highly value expertise in electronics manufacturing, microelectronics, microsystems, integrated optics, fiber optics, optoelectronics, RF technology, communications, semiconductor and quantum physics, thermal management, cleanroom processes, reliability and failure analyses, and metrology
• Experience in project preparation and management as well as working in the customer interface
• Strong cooperation and networking skills. You contribute to a positive team spirit.
• Eager to study and develop new practical solutions, with ability and patience to tolerate uncertainty and unexpected outcomes
• Fluent English skills, both spoken and written
