The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering of Aarhus University is looking for a visionary Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)/Associate Professor in the area of Digitalization for Structural Engineering.

Job description

This position is part of the section for Structural Engineering.
Your tasks will be:

  • Teaching/upgrading existing courses related to Structural Engineering at both B.Sc. and M.Sc. level in Civil and Architectural Engineering programmes.
  • Supervising students at different levels (e.g., multidisciplinary projects, master theses, doctoral theses).
  • Conducting research through externally sponsored grants at national and international levels.
  • Establishing relevant collaborations with the Danish industry.
  • Contributing to the operation of the department.

Your profile

We are looking for multiple profiles that can strengthen the department's competencies in machine learning, digital fabrication and computational design with focus on civil engineering structures. The candidate shall hold:

  • Engineering background (B.Sc. and M.Sc.).
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field of research.
  • Excellent proficiency in the English language.

The following list of competencies and experiences are a requirement:

  • Scientific computing, possibly with different programming languages.
  • Teaching and developing courses related to structural engineering.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and graduate students (B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. theses).

Candidates must demonstrate potential for outstanding research and teaching. The successful candidate shall demonstrate:

  • Some years of postgraduate research and publication experience are required. A preexisting and growing international research network is expected. Prior collaboration with the Danish innovation ecosystem is desired, but not essential.
  • Experience from successful external research collaborations with industry and academia, project management skills. Experience in the attraction of external funding is preferred.
  • Research talent documented through rising publication and citation records evidenced by appropriate bibliometric parameters in reputable international peer reviewed journals.
  • Well-defined research focus and sound strategy to develop a research group.

Who we are

Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering was established on January 1, 2021, in connection with Aarhus University’s reorganization of the engineering area. The department employs around 100 people and is responsible for research and education within the department’s scientific areas. We educate both Bachelors and Master of Science in Engineering and around 950 students are enrolled in our study programs. Furthermore, we also offer an ambitious PhD program. Our PhD students have high academic ambitions and deliver high-quality results for both the private and the public sectors.

Through research and development, we forge sustainable technological solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing industry and society. We strive to contribute to sustainable development and to create green solutions to challenges within construction, indoor climate, geotechnics, environmental and climate adaptation and many other areas.

Our research is both basic and applied, and we develop current knowledge into workable solutions in the business community. We collaborate with a wide range of public and private enterprises, and many of the department's research and development activities are based on the innovation needs of the business community. Through collaboration, we ensure that the knowledge and technology generated in the university's technical research environments are clearly anchored in reality and benefit the surrounding society. Based on our research in building materials, architectural design and technology, we also offer research-based public sector services and consultancy on technology to public agencies and ministries.

Technical Sciences Tenure Track

Aarhus University offers talented scientists from around the world attractive career perspectives via the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of six years with the prospect of performance- based advancement to a tenured Associate Professorship.

The aim of the Technical Sciences Tenure Track Programme is to:

  • attract outstanding talented individuals that are competitive at an international level
  • to promote the early development of independent research success early in the career of scientists
  • to create transparency in the academic career path

As part of the tenure track position, the candidate is offered:

  • access to research infrastructure
  • capability development, including postgraduate teacher training
  • a mentoring programme
  • support to develop scientific networks and to secure interdisciplinary research at the highest level

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
