JOB /OFFER DESCRIPTION 
As part of its Generic 2022 call for projects, the AM*IDEX foundation of the Aix-Marseille Université has selected the IRV (Illustration, Representation, View) project, headed by Stéphane Lojkine, to develop the Utpictura18 database and website. 

IRV plans to fund a 36-month doctoral contract, starting September 1, 2024, to support the project.

The candidate should hold a master's degree in literature or art history before this date, with research experience in pre-1800 literature and/or art. Additional training in aesthetics will be welcome. 

Candidates must present a research project in literature and the arts that is likely to contribute to the development of the Utpictura18 database and website. The PhD will be in French Literature, Comparative Literature or the Arts, under the supervision or co-supervision of Stéphane Lojkine within ED354 at the Aix-Marseille Université.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED RESEARCH FIELDS, REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVEL, PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, OTHER RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS
The candidate must hold a master's degree in literature or art history before the start of the contract, with research experience in pre-1800 literature and/or art. Additional training in aesthetics would be welcome.

Perfect command of spoken and written French is required.

Soft skills: This PhD fellowship is part of a collective project. The candidate will be expected to join the team and take part in collective activities linked to the project (colloquia, issues of the Rubriques journal, text editing). Skills in digital humanities would be welcome.

REQUESTED DOCUMENTS OF APPLICATION, ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, SELECTION PROCESS
The project must include:

    1. A study of a textual corpus enabling the relationship between text and image to be examined: illustrated novels, writings on art, theatre and dramatic iconography, etc. The candidate should explain the methodology he or she intends to use to develop this investigation, and the historical, semiological and possibly political issues he or she intends to address. 

    2. The study of an iconographic corpus related to the textual corpus, and intended to enrich or complete an existing corpus within the Utpictura18 database. The project will indicate what is already in the database, what is proposed to be added, and which documentary and heritage collections will be exploited.

    3. A proposal to promote and disseminate this work using the tools developed by Utpictura18: production of an educational dossier, publication of an illustrated text for the Utpictura18 Library, production of a virtual exhibition for the Utpictura18 Gallery, in partnership with a museum, library or other cultural institution.

Documents to be supplied in a zip file, exclusively in French or in English (other languages must be translated):

  1. Valid ID.

  2. Proof of C2 level (CEFR) in French.

  3. Master's diploma. If the Master's degree has not yet been defended, enclose a letter from the student's supervisor indicating the date on which the defense is due to take place.

  4. Doctoral project based on a textual corpus, a pdf document of no more than 10 pages including a state of the art, a presentation of the projected lines of research, a bibliography and a provisional timetable for completion of the work.

  5. A letter of intent, in which the candidate presents his or her candidacy, indicating which iconographic corpus he or she wishes to study and how he or she proposes to promote and disseminate his or her work via Utpictura18. PDF document, maximum 2 pages.

  6. Master's thesis in pdf format, in French or in English.

Selected candidates will be auditioned in Aix-en-Provence on Wednesday June 5.
