The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.

Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.

Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.

Structural Biology is one of the most important family of techniques at the ESRF, both for academic and industrial users, with state-of-the-art instruments including the upgraded ID29 beamline for time-resolved serial crystallography.

You will join the team of scientists and software engineers working on the applications and data processing for structural biology, primarily for serial synchrotron crystallography.

You will conduct an original research program in the field of structural biology, involving the macromolecular biology instruments of ESRF (e.g. for room temperature and time resolved structural studies).

The work will take place in the Algorithms & scientific Data Analysis group, in close collaboration with the Structural Biology beamlines, notably ID29. Further information about the post can be obtained from Daniele de Sanctis (daniele.de_sanctis@esrf.fr) and Vincent Favre-Nicolin (favre@esrf.fr).

 Your missions include:

- Supporting the user research programme in structural biology, notably by validating and implementing novel and high-performance algorithms in the data processing pipelines of ESRF beamlines

- Conduct an original research project, exploiting and expanding novel algorithms for macromolecular crystallography

- PhD degree or equivalent in Physics, Biology, Computer Science, Science or similar area

- Professional experience of 3 years after obtaining the PhD is desirable

- X-ray macromolecular crystallography experience is essential

- Strong programming skills in Python are required

- Experience in machine learning and/or algorithm development are a strong asset

- Curiosity, good communication skills and being a team player is required, in order to work with engineers and scientists with different techniques and beamlines

- Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)

Fixed-term contract of 5 years

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
