We are looking for a motivated PhD student for the UGent funded project WOODCHAR. The aim of this project is to study woodland dynamics in NW Europe during the last 2500 years through the analysis of archaeological remains of charcoal kilns.
This will be done based on the taxonomic identification of charcoal preserved in ancient charcoal kilns, combined with the spatial and chronological analysis of these archaeological features. This will result in a reconstruction of the past occurrence, composition and dynamics of woodlands in different regions in NW Europe over the last 2500 years. Finally, the role of human impact on these different elements of woodland dynamics will be studied.
The job includes fieldwork and participation to international workshops and scientific conferences. The ultimate goal of your research is to obtain a doctoral degree.
