The project will be supervised by KU Leuven professor Maarten De Vos (Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) & Department of Development and Regeneration). The successful candidate will closely collaborate with other PhD candidates working on the same project and on related projects (involving advanced biomedical data analysis and AI approaches). The research is embedded in a stimulating interdisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art analysis expertise and with ample opportunities for interaction with clinicians and experts on aging.

Who are we? The STADIUS-BIOMED research group at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) of KU Leuven is one of the world-leading groups developing and validating AI approaches in Healthcare, with applications covering various clinical disciplines.
The group is a friendly, close-knit collaborative team focused on delivering novel innovations into healthcare practice.
We closely collaborate with medical colleagues in UZ Leuven and with various industry partners, and have prior expertise in deploying methodology in clinical applications.

Responsibilities

We are offering an exciting postdoctoral position at the KU Leuven, within the Biomed lab (https://biomed-kuleuven.web.app/research), to develop new trustworthy AI algorithms for disease quantification from heterogeneous biomedical data.  Particularly relevant is experience with synthetic biomedical data and/or AI for cancer pathology.

We are developing new trustworthy AI methods for generating synthetic data, evaluating the quality of synthetic data and predictive disease modelling from multi-source biomedical data (including clinical, biological, imaging and time series data). In particular, we are interested in new AI models which can learn from synthetic data and from imperfect data, but once applied in real-world practice, are generalisable across clinical sites and settings, explainable for clinical use, and generating clinical impact.

Profile

The requirements for the position are:

  • Obtained a PhD in a relevant field, and high quality publications
  • Machine/deep learning algorithms.
  • Biomedical data science.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python
  • Proficient English, both oral and written.
  • Enthusiasm about research and medical applications of AI.
  • Aptitude to work independently, lead project deliverables and meet deadlines.
  • Good team spirit and participation to the lab’s scientific life.
  • Aptitude to collaborate with local and international project partners (including technical and clinical collaborators).
