Leuven.AI, the KU Leuven Institute for Artificial Intelligence, seeks to hire a research manager, who will play a central role in the development and operation of its mission.
Leuven.AI unites AI and its renowned AI experts at KU Leuven in an interdisciplinary institute with societal relevance. It involves more than 100 professors, 500 researchers, belonging to 11 faculties and 8 campuses, making artificial intelligence a focal point of research at KU Leuven.
Leuven.AI fosters AI research by providing a forum for exchanging ideas and for initiating projects and collaborations on AI. It offers the new AI as a Service (AIaaS) with the aim to foster AI and its applications across KU Leuven. It fosters AI education by offering courses and contributing to education programmes, and it offers expertise on all aspects of AI, including on the possibilities and limitations of AI and its implications from an ethical, legal and societal perspective.

Responsibilities

The research manager will occupy a central position in Leuven.AI who will further expand Leuven.AI’s role in research on AI and its applications in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team of Leuven.AI and AI as a Service.

More specifically, this includes the following activities:

  • You follow and assess relevant developments within artificial intelligence and its applications.
  • You identify opportunities for AI and its applications across different disciplines at KU Leuven.
  • You initiate, attain, and coordinate research project ideas on AI and its applications, especially (but not exclusively) using the mechanisms of AI as a Service. AI as a Service is the newly created KU Leuven service that provides internal consultancy on AI and its applications.
  • You manage the daily operation of AI as a Service and its AI experts.
  • You present research results, conduct lectures and participate in relevant meetings and working groups on an internal, national and international level.
  •  By attending and organizing conferences, workshops, courses and meetings in AI, you expand Leuven.AI’s network in academia, in industry and society.
  • You collaborate, interact and act as a liaison between the many research groups involved in Leuven.AI, as well as with corporate services (such as the KU Leuven Research Coordination Office and Leuven Research and Development).
  • You coordinate the internal and external communication strategy for Leuven.AI and use this to leverage Leuven.AI’s mission.
  • You acquire deep knowledge of the scientific, organisational, and educational aspects of AI at KU Leuven
  • You contribute to the development of a coherent and compelling vision and strategy for Leuven.AI. You help with the implementation of the activities and strategy of Leuven.AI.
  • You support the management of Leuven.AI and you promote and represent Leuven.AI both internally and externally.
  • You provide a point of contact for Leuven.AI for questions concerning research and applications of AI and you are able to channel these questions.

Profile

We are looking for a candidate with the following profile:

  • Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related domain.
  • Knowledge and experience with artificial intelligence research, preferably in multiple subfields.
  • Experienced in developing AI applications, preferably across multiple disciplines.
  • A broad understanding of the philosophical, legal, ethical and societal implications of AI.
  • Affinity with the AI community and with working in an interdisciplinary setting.
  • Experience in project conception, definition, acquisition and management.
  • Possess knowledge and insight into research and valorization funding principles, possibilities and schemes.
  • Outstanding communication, networking, organizational and management skills.
  • A talent for leadership
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a research team.
  • Fluent in English, both written and oral. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
