Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our university community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en.

The Hemato-oncology Research Group (HemoRES) at Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specializing in translational leukemia research. The research group works under the Tampere Center for Child, Adolescent and Maternal Health Research (TamCAM). The position is full-time and will be filled for a fixed-term period of three years.

The Hemato-oncology research group studies the molecular mechanisms underlying childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), aiming to develop novel, mechanism-based targeted therapies. Our approach combines a variety of genomic and molecular analyses, drug screening, patient samples, and disease modeling using both cellular and animal systems, including zebrafish.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is committed to high quality research and education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct basic, applied, clinical, and translational research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Our existing research areas in health research include biomedical engineering fields from biomaterials and microtechnologies to health data science, cell and molecular biology, with applications in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular and celiac diseases, immunology, and ophthalmology.

Job description

We are looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a project led by Prof. Olli Lohi. The project, funded by the Jane & Aatos Erkko Foundation, focuses on developing targeted therapies for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Our research aims to identify novel and effective combination treatments for T-ALL, enhance immunotherapies, and investigate the mechanisms of drug resistance. The work involves the use of cell lines, patient samples, zebrafish models, and a variety of cellular, molecular, and genome-wide assays.

Requirements

We are seeking a versatile and independent researcher with experience and a proven track record—such as published work or a thesis—in a wide range of cellular and molecular biology techniques, including cell culture, drug testing, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and data analysis (e.g., NGS data, R software). Prior experience with leukemia research or zebrafish experimentation would be appreciated.

  • Applicable doctoral degree in the field, e.g. Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, or Genomics
  • High motivation and a strong research orientation
  • The ability to work independently, and stay current with relevant literature
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, along with a willingness to mentor junior researchers
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of three year, starting on 1 January 2025 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6 (teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary of Postdoctoral Researcher is around 3500-3800 EUR/month.

We offer a world-class research environment in internationally recognized research groups. We have strong collaborative networks and offer great opportunities for researchers to develop their careers in an international setting.
