Let’s shape the future - University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

The Vision Lab of the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) senior researcher in the field of in vivo microstructure imaging with magnetic resonance imaging. This position is part of the ERC Consolidator project “A data-driven approach to microstructure imaging” (ADAMI), funded by the European Union. ADAMI is a highly interdisciplinary project that combines insights from physics/engineering (imaging and image processing of MRI and light-sheet microscopy), biological and medical sciences (tissue microstructure, immunostaining, and neuroscience), and computer science (data analysis, machine learning, and artificial intelligence) to achieve a breakthrough in microstructure imaging with MRI.

Position

  • You will focus on the acquisition, processing, curation, and modeling of quantitative MRI data of healthy human brains and applying quantitative MRI in patient studies.
  • You will present your findings at international conferences, publish scientific articles related to the research project, and participate in outreach events.
  • As a senior researcher, you will also help coordinate the project and assist in the supervision of PhD students.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in (Medical) Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • You have a track record in quantitative MRI (diffusion, relaxometry, …) evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.
  • You have in-depth knowledge of medical imaging and image processing, in particular in the context of quantitative MRI.
  • You can perform state-of-the-art artifact correction (e.g. noise, deformations, motion, and bias-field), (nonlinear) multi-modal image registration, and modeling (e.g. multi-compartment fitting) and can integrate all these steps in efficient pipelines (e.g. through the use of bash and/or python).
  • You can write image processing and analysis routines in Python, Matlab, or C++.
  • Hands-on experience with an MRI scanner, experience with multi-modal quantitative MRI (e.g. diffusion + relaxometry), and experience with deep learning are considered a bonus.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
  • You can work independently, creatively, and efficiently with attention to quality and integrity.
  • You are a strong team player with the ability to cooperate and succeed in a dynamic international environment.
  • You can speak and write fluently in English and you have excellent communication skills.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time contract as a senior researcher for a period of 1 year, renewable to 3 years after positive evaluation.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow in the Contract Research Staff category (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will receive ecocheques, an internet-connectivity allowance, group insurance, income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • The planned start date is as soon as possible, preferably no later than September 2024.
  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
