Introduction

Are you eager to accelerate the energy transition by making green hydrogen more affordable by developing advanced models while working with partners across Europe?

Job Description

This position is part of a large European collaborative project aimed at accelerating renewable hydrogen and sustainable fuel production through advanced simulation models and sector-coupling applications. Your main objective will be to develop a coupled dynamic model of an alkaline water electrolyzer capable of predicting key performance indicators, including cell potential, gas purity, Faradaic efficiency and degradation behaviour.

You will work closely with project partners across Europe to validate the model using experimental data and integrate it into larger system-level simulation frameworks developed within the consortium.
In addition, you will supervise Bachelor's and Master's students who perform laboratory experiments that support and validate the modelling activities. You will collaborate with colleagues from both academia and industry and contribute to scientific publications and presentations at international conferences.

You will be part of the Applied Electrochemistry Laboratory research group that conducts internationally recognized research on electrochemical technologies for the energy transition, with a particular focus on alkaline water electrolysis. Our work addresses three key challenges: improving efficiency, operational flexibility and long-term durability. By combining fundamental understanding with applied research and close collaboration with industrial partners, we develop solutions that contribute directly to the optimization of industrial-scale electrolyzers.
More information about the research group can be found at: Electrochemical Engineering (tue.nl)

Job Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and independent researcher who enjoys combining modelling with experimental research and working in an international, multidisciplinary environment.

You have:

  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience with mathematical modelling and simulation; experience with modelling electrochemical systems is considered an advantage.
  • Experimental experience in a laboratory;
  • Knowledge of or interest in electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering;
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs.
  • A team player who enjoys coaching PhD and Master's students and working in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
  • A proven ability to manage complex projects to completion on schedule.
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English, good communication and leadership skills.

Conditions of Employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:

  • Full-time employment for 2.5 years.
  • Salary in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 10 (min. € 4,422 (step 4) to max. € 5,760 gross per month).
  • A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
  • High-quality training programs on general skills, didactics and topics related to research and valorization.
  • An excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care and sports facilities.
  • Unlimited access to the modern on‑campus TU/e Student Sports Center at an exceptionally affordable rate.
  • Partially paid parental leave and an allowance for commuting, working from home and internet costs.
  • A TU/e Postdoc Association that helps you to build a stronger and broader academic and personal network, and offers tailored support, training and workshops.
  • A Staff Immigration Team is available for international candidates, as are a tax compensation scheme (the Expat Scheme) and a compensation for moving expenses.

On our website you can discover even more information about our conditions of employment. Build on your career at TU/e!
