The Seismic imaging and Interferometry group at SED has an open position for a PhD student in passive seismic interferometry.
At the interface of seismology, hydrogeology, and energy sciences, this project aims to advance the knowledge of how Earth's shallow fluid systems change over time and space. Being able to closely observe and monitor these processes is pivotal in enhancing our understanding and management of critical resources such as water and energy, as well as geohazards. Switzerland is already heavily affected by climate change, with long hot and dry periods in summer, inexorably melting glaciers and snow-poor winters. In particular, in the Swiss Alpine region, these mass-balance changes have significant impacts on slope stability, induced seismicity and groundwater recharge.
Such mass-balance changes modify stresses in the subsurface, affecting speed and attenuation of seismic waves crossing the regions. Switzerland has one of the densest seismic monitoring networks in the world, allowing us to work toward a near real-time monitoring of the stress state of the subsurface.
The PhD student will work in the field of passive seismic interferometry and tackle the following aspects:
As a final project goal stands the development of a real-time monitoring framework for Switzerland using cutting-edge seismic interferometry methods to probe the 4-dimensional (space-time) changes in subsurface fluids.
