Technical Scientist

The ETH Zurich core facility NEXUS Personalized Health enables biomedical discovery and translational research for personalized health. We offer a broad range of expertise, from software engineering and biomedical data management to statistical and bioinformatics services. Embedded in this multi-disciplinary facility, the Screening & Lab Automation group specialises in screening technologies, assay development, complex cell systems and lab automation. Our projects range from biochemical screens to combinatorial chemical synthesis to sophisticated screening assays with patient-derived organoids.

Job description

The Screening & Lab Automation team at ETH Zurich's NEXUS Core Facility is seeking a highly collaborative and service-oriented scientist or technician to temporarily join our team as a Technical Scientist. We provide cutting-edge laboratory automation and high-throughput screening (HTS) services to researchers across various disciplines. As part of the Screening & Lab Automation team, you will support screening projects while contributing to general lab management and system maintenance. This role is ideal for someone passionate about science, technology, and lab automation, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support high-throughput screening (HTS) and high-content screening (HCS) projects, assisting researchers with assay development, assay execution and data interpretation
  • Prepare and maintain cell cultures (e.g., cell expansion for screening experiments) in a BSL-2 environment
  • Support project workflows and assay development through the preparation of buffers, solutions, and consumables
  • Operate and maintain automated liquid handling platforms and plate readers; prior experience is a plus, but not required, training will be provided
  • Carry out instrument calibration and routine maintenance of lab automation equipment
  • Work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research environment, assisting scientists in optimizing screening workflows

Profile

Required Qualifications:

  • A technical diploma, MSc in biology, bioengineering, or a related field
  • Strong background in standard cell culture work (preferably in a BSL-2 laboratory)
  • Affinity for laboratory automation and screening technologies (experience is a plus, but not required)
  • High level of accuracy, reliability, and independence in executing lab tasks
  • Strong team player with excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in English and German

  • Hands-on mentality in problem-solving
  • Strong technical affinity and ability to quickly learn new technologies

This is a temporary position until June 2026 and includes hands-on training in laboratory automation.
