ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.
YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • Your research should fit with the theme Higher Education Governance, the research focus of the Centre for Higher Education Governance Ghent (CHEGG). The centre is part of the department of Sociology, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences. We work on two subthemes: “The dynamics of markets, governments and networks in higher education” and “Higher education institutions as strategic organisations”. Your work will focus on the latter theme, with an emphasis on organizational accountability, identity and legitimacy. Recently, we also started to explore the subtheme of “Higher education as a field of study”.
  • Apart from academic research, you may be invited to contribute to commissioned research and teaching.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate. Your doctorate should preferably be in Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or a degree recognized as equivalent.
  • It is considered an advantage if candidates have research experience in the field of study concerned (higher education), proven by recent publications in national and international peer reviewed journals and/or books.
  • Candidates should have a keen interest in interdisciplinary research, there is no explicit preference for either a focus on qualitative or quantitative methods, but proficiency in both areas is appreciated.
  • The project leader will need to assure that the full project research team is balanced in terms of backgrounds and expertise.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for the period of 1 year.
  • Your contract will start on 9/01/2025 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers. Click here for a complete overview of all the staff benefits.
