- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medicine Solna (MedS) at Karolinska Institutet is recruiting a Professor in Dermatology with a research profile in experimental and translational skin biology. The employment is based at the Division of Dermatology and Venereology, a growing academic environment with close interaction between experimental research and clinical dermatology. Karolinska Institutet offers a research environment where basic science, translational medicine and clinical research are integrated to advance future diagnostics and treatments.

Description of the subject area

Research in dermatology at Karolinska Institutet spans clinical, translational and experimental research in inflammatory skin diseases, tissue immunology, skin barrier biology and regenerative medicine. The environment includes well-established clinical cohorts and biobanks, as well as close interactions with research groups at, among others, the Center for Molecular Medicine.

Skin diseases are among the most common reasons for seeking medical care and are often chronic, resource-intensive and associated with a substantial impact on quality of life. To enable the development of future targeted and regenerative therapies, there is a major need for a deeper mechanistic understanding of disease processes and repair mechanisms in the skin.

Your mission

The employment aims to strengthen experimental and translational dermatology, preferably with a particular focus on molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating tissue biology, injury, regeneration, inflammation and cancer in human skin. Research may include, for example, chronic wounds, stromal cell biology, skin responses to cancer therapies, or advanced molecular analyses of human tissues with clear translational potential.

The employment includes leadership of an independent research group as well as participation in academic leadership within the department and the division, with the aim of further developing internationally competitive research in dermatology. As Professor, you are also expected to participate actively in the planning and delivery of teaching within the subject. Teaching includes participation in the medical programme, including integrated teaching formats such as team-based learning,, as well as teaching and supervision within other educational programmes at Karolinska Institutet.

You will also

  • establish and develop national and international research collaborations,
  • attract external research funding in national and international competition,
  • supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers,
  • contribute to education at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels,
  • participate in the strategic development of research and education in dermatology at Karolinska Institutet,
  • contribute to academic leadership within the department and the wider scientific community.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated very good pedagogical skills and excellent scientific skills.

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements are stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure and these are applied in relation to the subject area of the established recruitment profile.

See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet.

It is also a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2) and leadership and collaboration skills (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the assessment criteria are stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure and these are applied in relation to established profile of employment:

See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet.

It is also meritorious that you have demonstrated:

  • the ability to integrate experimental and translational research using human tissues and clinical materials with molecular analytical methods,
  • internationally leading research in experimental and translational skin biology,
  • expertise in molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating tissue biology, regeneration and disease processes in human skin,
  • experience of advanced molecular, genomic and spatial technologies applied to human tissues,
  • successful integration of clinical materials with experimental research,
  • experience of leading interdisciplinary research collaborations spanning basic science, translational research and clinical practice.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
