Third-cycle subject: Materials Science and Engineering
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering seeks 2 (two) doctoral students in materials characterization - focusing on developing structure-property correlations in engineering materials. The doctoral work aims at enabling sustainable industrial transformations by providing sustainable material solutions for advanced high strength steels (AHSS) for use as chassis components and for automotive gears. Sustainable materials solutions will be arrived at via establishing structure-property correlations using lab-scale characterizations methods and large scale infrastructures (LSI) as well as modelling. The background to this work is that these vehicle components are predominantly subjected to dynamic loading, and so the fatigue performance of the constitute material becomes a critical factor in both material and component design. Despite the importance of the components’ materials microstructures, the relationship between microstructural constituents, residual stresses and the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation and propagation remains underexplored, especially under complicated loading schemes such as occasional overloads or temperature peaks. Accordingly, a novel research approach proposed for these doctoral student works is that via consideration of the interplay between microstructure, residual stress and overloads, as well as developing LSI-based methods for material characterization related to fatigue, fatigue-optimized materials solutions tailored for dynamic automotive components can be devised. Devising such solutions involves developing an in-depth understanding of microstructures and mechanical properties to be able to design the materials to meet the simultaneous requirements of high static strength and enhanced fatigue performance. The projects will be conducted within the Center for Mechanics and Materials Design (MMD) and Steel4Fatigue (an EU-funded) project, and the NEutron and X-ray science for industrial Technology transitions (NEXT) Competence Center. These projects/centres involve collaboration of academic and industrial partners and large-scale infrastructures.
Supervision: Peter Hedström and Mohammad Hoseini Athar are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
MSc in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
