Job description

Oxygenated organic radicals are key drivers of the chemistry in many systems, such as the metabolism of living organisms, polymerisation, combustion systems, and the natural environment (Earth’s atmosphere). But very few techniques are available to detect them today. We are seeking a highly-motivated researcher to work on the development and application of a mass spectrometric technique (proton transfer mass spectrometer, PTr-MS) to the detection of individual oxygenated organic radicals in ambient air, as part of the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced project EPHEMERAL. The work will include the characterization and optimization of a state-of-the-art Time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTr-MS) and other instruments to detect these radicals in laboratory and ambient air. This position will be in the Nozière group at the Department of Chemistry of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, in Chemistry, Physics, or appropriate field. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • a documented experimental experience with gas flow systems ·        some background or experience in standalone mass spectrometry
  • excellent written and oral communication skills in English, as this will be required in day-to-day work.
  • strong problem-solving skills
  • self-motivated, detail- and goal-oriented
  • able to work both independently and cooperatively with a team.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • some experience in instrument development
  • some background or experience in chemical ionization, Proton Transfer Mass Spectrometry (Ptr-MS), or Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry,
  • Some knowledge of atmospheric chemistry or gas-phase kinetics
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equalitye

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
