The Light&Lighting Laboratory research group, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), boasts a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, connections with companies and non-profit organisations, a stable supply of talented PhD students and a supportive working environment. The research covers four themes: indoor lighting, optical design, lighting metrology and visual perception/appearance. International recognition is gained through activities within CIE (Comité Internationale de l'Eclairage) and through publications in international journals. There are partnerships with several universities, research institutes, and national measurement institutes (NIST, LNE-CNAM, PTB).
A PhD position is currently available in the field of lighting metrology.

Project

Artifical light at night (ALAN) is rapidly increasing worldwide. More and more, questions are being raised about the potential adverse effects of ALAN on the night-time environment. In this context, the generic term "obtrusive light" has been introduced.

Many "unknowns" remain to be addressed however, before to understand the real impact of ALAN in order to be able to design effective mitigation measures. Moreover, while obtrusive lighting is an interdisciplinary subject, it is mainly addressed within individual disciplinary boundaries, leading to a fragmented knowledge base. 
Fairly recently, CIE published an updated guideline on the limitation of the effects of obtrusive light from outdoor lighting installations (CIE 150:2017), in which threshold illuminance, luminance and luminous intensity values were defined for a number of applications.
However, a harmonization of light measurement methods and effective lighting metrics with regard to obtrusive lighting, which take into account aspects affecting its level (light colour, static vs. dynamic, age, etc.) and new measurement methods (e.g. hyperspectral imaging), is still lacking.
The goal of this PhD research project is to investigate relevant light measurement methods in relation to the human visual sensation of obtrusive lighting and to define effective obtrusive light metrics, for different lighting applications and taking into account multiple influencing factors.

Profile

For this PhD research project, we are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with a Master's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, ElICT,...), Physics, Photonics, or another scientific discipline with a strong interest in optical metrology.

Moreover, we expect that:
- you achieved excellent results during your studies;
- you have a critical mindset and deliver qualitative work;
- you enjoy working in team but can also work independently;
- you have good communication skills (both written and oral);
- you possess good programming skills (Python or Matlab);
- you have a basic knowledge of statistics;
- you have experience in scientific literature review and interpretation.

Offer

We offer a PhD position in Engineering Technology, for a term of at least one year, renewable up to four years (subject to positive evaluation).
