Quantum Solid-State Physics (QSP) is a young and dynamic research unit within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at KU Leuven. KU Leuven consistently ranks among the world’s top 100 universities (Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings) and has a long tradition of pioneering research and high-quality education.

Research at QSP focuses on quantum phenomena at the atomic and microscopic scale, investigating the origin and control of functional electric properties (magnetic, superconducting, semiconducting, dielectric, optical) in systems with reduced dimensionality — from single-atom defects to clusters of atoms, nanoparticles, 2D materials, thin films, and complex nanosystems and devices. While the focus is on fundamental understanding, QSP also engages in application-oriented research, often in collaboration with imec.

The QSP unit comprises ~40 PhD and postdoctoral researchers, 8 full-time and 2 part-time professors, supported by a professional technical and administrative team. It can rely on a wide range of in-house experimental facilities (https://fys.kuleuven.be/qsp/facilities/home), as well as expertise and access at international large-scale facilities.

Project

We are offering a PhD position within an exciting joint research project between the Quantum Solid-State Physics division (QSP) at KU Leuven and imec. The PhD candidate will work in close collaboration with teams at both institutes.
This project focuses on investigating the coherent interaction between light and matter within the framework of circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit QED). We will study the coupling between microwave photons in superconducting resonators and single spins in state-of-the-art silicon-based qubit devices fabricated at imec's 300mm fab.
Our objectives:
  • To investigate coherent light-matter interaction at the single-photon, single-spin limit, we adopt a novel hybrid approach, using a standalone superconducting resonator and planar gate Si quantum dot (QD) systems.
  • To develop low-loss, standalone superconducting resonators that allow to achieve high charge-photon coupling with a Si QD system.
  • To demonstrate strong spin-photon coupling between the photons in an off-chip resonator and planar gate QDs using micromagnets for spin-charge hybridization.
The results will have direct relevance for quantum computing, particularly in developing hybrid qubit interfaces and quantum buses.

Profile

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with:

  • A Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • A strong background in quantum mechanics and solid-state physics.
  • Hands-on experience in experimental quantum systems, low-temperature physics, or microwave engineering (preferred but not required).
  • Excellent communication skills and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Fluency in English, both in writing and speaking.
  • Willingness to contribute to teaching activities and science outreach.

Offer

We offer a fully funded PhD position at KU Leuven (for a maximum period of 4 years, upon positive progress evaluation).
  • The PhD position is immediately available.
  • Access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities.
  • An interdisciplinary and international research environment.
  • Opportunities for training, conference participation, and collaboration across disciplines.
  • Direct collaboration with and training opportunities by our project partners at imec, a world-leading research hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies, with a strong focus on quantum and spintronic research. Its unique 300 mm cleanroom facilities enable the development of advanced quantum devices, including silicon-based qubits. Located next to KU Leuven, imec offers a collaborative environment at the intersection of fundamental research and cutting-edge technology.
  • KU Leuven is a research university in the city of Leuven, Belgium. KU Leuven is the oldest university in Belgium and one of the largest in Europe, it consistently ranks among the top 100 universities in the world by major ranking tables. As of 2025, it ranks 43th in the Times Higher Education rankings and 63rd according to QS World University Rankings. It has also been consistently ranked by Thomson Reuters as Europe's most innovative university, in terms of patents (and respective citations) being filed by its researchers.
