The Leuven Institute for Healthcare Policy (LIGB), established in October 2015 within the Faculty of Medicine at KU Leuven, brings together a broad range of expertise in healthcare management and policy. Within its Quality and Patient Safety pillar, the institute conducts a variety of research projects in close collaboration with healthcare organizations. These projects are supported by a multidisciplinary team and are complemented by training initiatives. We work closely with numerous Flemish hospitals, striving together for the highest quality care for patients, their families, and healthcare professionals.

As part of our focus on quality and patient safety, one of our key research lines addresses care pathways and variations in care processes. To support this work, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic doctoral researcher.

Project

  • You will be appointed as a full-time doctoral fellow at KU Leuven (Department of Public Health and Primary Care).
  • Your research will be conducted within the LIGB, focusing on variation in care processes across various clinical domains, such as colorectal surgery, breast surgery, stroke care, and hip fractures.
  • You will be actively involved in developing quality indicators, collecting and analyzing data, preparing feedback reports for participating hospitals
  • You will support healthcare organizations in optimizing their care processes and help document their internal quality improvement initiatives.
  • You will also be responsible for organizing knowledge-sharing activities among the participating hospitals.
  • Your research is expected to result in scientific publications in English.
  • You will follow the doctoral program at KU Leuven under the supervision of Prof. Kris Vanhaecht and Dr. Ellen Coeckelberghs, and collaborate closely with other team members and clinical experts from partner hospitals.
  • The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of four years, with the objective of obtaining a PhD.

Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree, preferably in a healthcare-related field (e.g., biomedical sciences, medicine, physiotherapy, nursing, etc.).
  • You have a strong interest in scientific research and are motivated to pursue a PhD. You have already build a good study curriculum.
  • You are passionate about healthcare and enjoy working as part of a collaborative research team.
  • You are proactive, possess a strong sense of responsibility, and are able to work independently while also valuing teamwork and constructive feedback.
  • You have access to your own vehicle and are willing to travel to partner hospitals across Flanders.
  • You are flexible and able to attend (pre-scheduled) evening meetings when needed.

Offer

We offer a full-time (100%) appointment for an initial period of 1 year, with the possibility of renewal up to 4 years in total. The goal of the position is to complete a PhD at KU Leuven.
