The research unit of Literary theory and Cultural Studies at KU Leuven consists of several large interdisciplinary research teams and Master’s programs. The candidate will function within the Cultural Studies and Cultural Studies programs. Research focuses include cultural policy, ‘Creative Practices’ (including literary culture, popular culture, dance and performance, photography and film, graphic novel) and Cultural memory and Identity (memory studies, migration, heritage and digital cultural practices).

Responsibilities

We are seeking a doctoral assistant to perform the following research activities (60% of the part-time mandate):

  • Supervising master’s theses in Cultural Studies;
  • Participating in the Research Group’s activities, including research seminars, the Hermes Summer School, and symposia;
  • Developing independent research within cultural studies.
In addition, 40% of your appointment will be dedicated to the following educational and organizational tasks:
  • Assistance with the courses Introduction to Cultural Studies, Methods of Cultural Studies, and Capita Selecta (organizational follow-up, teaching one or more seminars within the course, participation in evaluation);
  • Organization of the OPO Master’s thesis (monitoring deadlines and communication);
  • Supervising ‘literatuurpakket’ in the (Dutch-language) Schakelprogramma Culturele studies;
  • Participation in teaching for a Master’s course that aligns with your profile;
  • Cover 1 or more invigilation duties during the three examination periods of the academic year.

Profile

You have a PhD within the humanities with a special interest in at least one or more of the following research areas:
  • Theory of cultural studies;
  • Qualitative and quantitative research methods;
  • Popular culture OR theatre and performance OR post/decolonialism.
You speak and write Dutch and English fluently and are able to supervise theses and papers in Dutch. You have experience in teaching and supervising students and enjoy working in a team. You are willing to apply for further research funding.

Offer

We offer a part-time appointment (60%) at postdoctoral level (doctoral assistant, salary scale 44) for three years (envisaged from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029). Subject to a positive evaluation, the appointment may be extended up to a total of six years. You will be part of a dynamic and diverse team.
The proposed start date is 1 September 2026, but an alternative start date can be discussed.
