The organization
Nikhef is the national institute for subatomic physics in the Netherlands. At Nikhef, approximately 220 physicists and 75 technical staff work together in an open and international scientific environment. Together they perform theoretical and experimental research in the fields of particle and astroparticle physics. Nikhef is a partnership between six major Dutch universities and NWO-I Foundation, the Institutes Organization of the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
Among the research collaborations Nikhef participates in are the ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb experiments at CERN, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean, the Virgo gravitational waves interferometer in Pisa, the Xenon-nT dark matter experiment in Gran Sasso, the Pierre Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina, and the eEDM research programme in Groningen. There are also scientific groups on Theory, Physics Data Processing and Detector R&D. Nikhef avails of excellently equipped technical departments in mechanics, electronics and computing.
At Nikhef, we have an open position for an enthusiastic Analog IC design engineer (m/f/x). You will strengthen our team and participate in international academic collaborations in design and R&D of IC’s for the next generation of Sub-atomic particle physics experiments, targeting CERN HL-LHC.
Active projects are large pixel detector IC’s for Silicon particle detection sensors, using stacked IC’s and sensors, and monolithic active pixel IC’s (MAPS), presently designed in 28nm & 65nm CMOS. Other ongoing developments are for extremely sensitive Seismic sensors based on MEMS devices using 350nm HVCMOS.
Our local team currently consists of 3 IC design engineers, one of whom is focused on digital design. The designers collaborate worldwide with other institutes in design teams with 5 to >20 engineers. The IC team is part of the Nikhef Electronics Technology group that comprises of analog- and digital electronics design engineers, board designers and technicians, all together ~25 persons. The group collaborates strongly with the Nikhef staff physicists and physics PhD candidates and mechanical ans software engineers.
The position
As an engineer you are responsible for:
Translating and combining system requirement into Analog IC block or subsystem requirements
Studying and/or proposing possible IC- and circuit architectures.
Designing circuits and detailed simulations of Analog IC circuits using our Cadence design tools, from design idea to tape-out, and participating in characterization and testing.
Plan and take ownership of tasks and proactively report progress to the project team.
Contribute to feasibility studies, compare alternative solutions and proactively share knowledge and best practices with the design team
Presenting and publishing your work in our international collaboration teams and at conferences.
Your profile
Well educated in this field of technology: MSc level (PhD) micro-electronics or similar and with at preferably 5 years of relevant design experience including tape-out.
Good understanding of transistor level circuit design techniques and methods, and semiconductor physics.
Enthusiastic and creative in developing new circuits, but also strong targeted to the deliverable.
Good communicator and preferably experience with collaboration in a multisite, multi-competence environment.
Experience with Cadence IC Design tools, and others like Matlab, Python and Linux OS.
Language: fluent English & Dutch (or willing to learn).
Offer
The candidate will be employed by the NWO-foundation. The gross monthly salary varies from approx. € 4.000,- to € 6.200,-, depending on level of education (MSc-PhD) and experience of the candidate. This salary is excluding fixed extra allowances of a month’s salary in May and December. Among the attractive secondary conditions are the inclusion in the Dutch government Pension fund, and an amount of 8 weeks holiday per year.
