Our thriving group of data analytical researchers is looking for a new addition in data scientist, who can and sees value in applying the latest artificial intelligence methods to solve interesting research problems arising in Luke.

The person works in Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) as a senior data scientist (official title: Senior Scientist or Research Scientist). Tasks include participation in planning new research projects and participation in execution of research projects as a senior expert in artificial intelligence / machine learning methods. More specifically, the tasks often include processing data that is in image, video or text format. The person should also have ability to lead projects and be active in applying for research funding. The position requires the person to be involved in scientific writing and publishing as an author. Also, the person is expected to take active role in the community of machine learning experts in Luke. This means, for example, training and consulting Luke researchers in machine learning methods and software as well as participation in peer support activities.

The person can work in any Luke location, but preferably in Turku, Jokioinen or Helsinki.

Our expectations of the applicant

- PhD or MSc in relevant quantitative field (Computer science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics or similar) or advanced Life Sciences degree with significant computational experience.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in image and/or video processing with deep/machine learning methods (for example image classification, object detection).
- Extensive knowledge and experience in natural language processing, large language models and speech recognition.
- Knowledge and experience in regression/classification/clustering/anomaly detection with methods such as SVMs, RF, GBM.
- General knowledge in handling the entire data processing pipeline from data acquisition phase, thru analysis to deployment.
- Skills in relevant data science tools and programming, for example with Python, R, SAS, Rapidminer and/or Matlab.
- Knowledge in computing systems (servers and cloud services, such as Azure, AWS, GCP).
- Achievements in private companies and/or publications as author in the areas of Deep-/Machine Learning, and/or Statistics.
- Experience and ability to perform research project work.
- Active collaboration and networking skills.
- Good written and oral skills in English language.
