In partnership with the Western Cape Government: Health, we seek someone who will provide vision and leadership that will enhance our position as a leading Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences to fill the position.

Appointment is on the joint establishment of Stellenbosch University and the Western Cape Government: Department of Health and Wellness on the conditions of service of the University.

Duties:

  • Reporting to the Executive Head: Department of Global Health, the incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Overall strategic leadership of the Division, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, research and innovation in Public Health and Health
  • Systems strengthening.
  • Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork.
  • Operational, human resources and financial management of the Division.
  • Service delivery in support of health systems strengthening and policy within  the Western Cape Government: Health, through the Health Impact Assessment Unit and the Health Service components.
  • Initiating and guiding collaborative research in priority areas.
  • Serving on University and external committees.
  • Expanding and strengthening social impact initiatives.
  • Developing, coordinating and evaluating undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes in public health, occupational medicine and health systems strengthening.
  • Promoting internal and external collaboration to advance health and development.
  • Contributing to grant writing to foster research projects.

Requirements:

  • Registration as a Public Health Medicine Specialist with the HPCSA.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification in public health.
  • Expertise and experience in undergraduate and postgraduate academic training and supervision, and in working with health service providers.
  • Proven management and leadership experience in academic or related environments.
  • Proven independent research experience with publications and related research outputs.
  • Experience of successful postgraduate supervision (on at least master's level).
  • Participating in and managing research within a project or team context.

Recommendations:

  • A doctorate OR advanced stage of completing a doctorate (for appointment at associate professor level) relevant to the field of Public Health Medicine.
  • Experience of international public health and health systems strengthening research or teaching collaborations.
  • Successful PhD supervision.
  • Interaction with national and international public health and health system-relevant institutions or agencies.
  • Success in securing grants.
