The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Tampere University invites applications for a three-year Doctoral Researcher position. The project “FadeFuel – Fatigue Tolerant Design in Green Fuel Environment” will take place at Tampere University from April 2025 to March 2028. Business Finland funds the project. The objective of the project is to advance the understanding and application of green fuel environments in both dry and lubricated machine elements, in terms of fatigue and tribologically induced damage and performance impact. Besides this, the aims are to enhance tribological material interactions, performance, and component lifetime.
A selected candidate will work on sliding tribology and lubrication in green fuel environments, focusing on the optimization of micro- and macro-dimple shapes and dimensions by laser and ultrasonic techniques to improve the frictional behavior and seizure resistance of journal bearings under green fuel-lubricated conditions.
Job description
We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher in the areas of Tribology, Machine Design and Materials Characterization. The Doctoral Researcher will work primarily on frictional behavior and seizure resistance of journal bearings made of bronze alloys under green fuel-lubricated conditions.
The candidate’s work will be focused on conducting doctoral research toward the completion of a doctoral dissertation with the FadeFuel project. This will mainly consist of research activities, including research planning, workshop organizing, data gathering, data analysis, article preparation, dissemination, and publishing. Moreover, the candidate is expected to participate in project-wide research efforts, in regular project meetings, and in the activities of the multidisciplinary research team. The candidate is expected to present their research at seminars and academic conferences.
The selected candidate will pursue a doctoral degree at Tampere University. Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in three (3) years.
The selected candidate can influence the emphasis of their research within the scientific scope of the FadeFuel project. A successful candidate is expected to show interest and enthusiasm towards working in a multidisciplinary team.
Requirements
The selected candidate must hold a Master’s Degree in a relevant field. The degree must be completed before the end of the application period. The selected candidate will have the ability to conduct independent scientific research with different methods related to the study of existing applications and research through error and trial. The candidate will have good critical and methodological skills and be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a research team. Competence in written and oral English is required.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is typically between 2600-2850 EUR/month. Our incentive salary system for Doctoral Researchers ensures salary increases based on the progress of the doctoral degree and thesis.
