We are now seeking an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor in the field of Architecture (Architectural Construction).

The position is placed in the Faculty of Built Environment at Tampere University. The position is available at the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture conducts high-impact, multidisciplinary research that encompasses the following broad areas of research: Architectural Construction, Architectural Design, History of Architecture and Management of Built Heritage, Renovation and Circular Economy, Sustainable Housing Design, and Urban Planning and Design. We share an interest in the ecological and cultural sustainability of the built environment and the social significance of space and place. Research areas are connected to our teaching activities and doctoral research, where students, teachers and researchers work together in an international environment. 

Job description  

We are seeking highly motivated candidates who will teach students from Finnish and multicultural backgrounds on all levels from bachelor and master to doctoral degree level and in the context of continuing education. You are capable of combining theoretical and practical knowledge in your teaching and research and you are comfortable with engaging with practitioners and other external stakeholders in the field. You have the ability to create and guide a research group and you have a sufficient understanding about the technical, ethical, ecological and socio-cultural aspects of the field of architecture in the Nordic context. Your area of research expertise should be sensitive towards the present environmental and societal challenges.  We appreciate bold, future-oriented research initiatives that address sustainability, current trends, and technical innovations which could influence the upcoming changes in the architects’ profession.

You are expected to establish leadership in your area of research and will have the possibility to direct your own research group or join an existing research group in the School of Architecture.  You are also expected to engage in the architecture school’s and university’ s academic community, e.g. participation in curriculum development planning and other activities.  You are a team player and enjoy mentoring and inspiring junior colleagues in their research and teaching. 

Requirements 

We expect you to have a master’s degree in the field of architecture or other applicable field and a doctoral degree in the field of architecture or other applicable field.  You should have a solid scientific knowledge in architectural construction and practical knowledge is an advantage. 

You need to have good communication skills in English and knowledge of the Finnish language is an advantage. 

Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:  

Assistant professor  

We require:  

  • Ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly activity at a high international level. 
  • Teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position. 

Associate professor

We require:    

  • A record of independent scholarly activity.      
  • Ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding.  
  • A record of international scholarly activity.        
  • Teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.        

Professor    

We require:    

  • High-level scholarly expertise and an international level of achievement.  
  • Experience of leading scientific research activities.    
  • Ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction.    
  • A record of winning external research funding.    
  • A record of international scholarly activity.    

On all levels we expect you to have a track record of peer-reviewed publications and strong methodological skills to carry out research in the field of architectural construction. Experience from supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses and supervision of PhD’s dissertations are an asset. Additionally, proven skills in managing courses in the field of architectural construction, and pedagogical training or readiness to undertake training are expected.

We offer    

Tampere University and the higher education community offer a unique multidisciplinary environment for interdisciplinary research and teaching. We offer an initial appointment for assistant and associate professor for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of the faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period, or earlier. You will be well-supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to a tenured position. Full professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset, after a trial period. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. The starting salary range will be from 4600 EUR to 5000 EUR / month for an assistant professor, from 5400 EUR to 5800 EUR / month for an associate professor, and from 6500 EUR to 7000 EUR / month for a professor. A higher salary may be agreed upon based on the successful candidate’s experience and/or performance. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

  • A research plan (max. 4 pages) including your research vision for the future in this field and a realistic implementation plan (research questions, methods, collaboration, funding, etc.) for your research for the next 5 years. Indicate your area(s) of expertise as listed. 
  •  A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages). This should include your motivation for applying for this post, a brief account of your career, career stage, career outlook, and key achievements and specific research areas of expertise. 
  • A practice portfolio, with role on each project clearly stated. (optional)  
  • The names, positions and contact details of two referees who can provide references. Only referees for shortlisted candidates may be contacted.    

Candidates may be invited for a video interview during the first stage of the recruitment process. The most qualified candidates will be invited for an interview and may undergo an aptitude assessment. They will also undergo a review by external experts and may be required to give a demonstration of their teaching skills.
