We are seeking an Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the field of Electronics and Embedded Systems.

The position is placed within the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University in the Unit of Electrical Engineering (EE). The EE unit covers a full range of research and educational areas, including Electronics and Embedded System, Electrical Energy Engineering, Communications Engineering, and Radio Systems. Our team includes 12 full professors, 9 tenure track professors, and roughly 220 staff members. We collaborate closely with several industrial partners and maintain an active presence in the international scientific community.

JOB DESCRIPTION 

We are seeking highly motivated and accomplished academic to expand the current research of the Electrical Engineering Unit. The research activities of the selected candidates will be integrated into our active and ambitious research work, which we currently organize through the Electronics Research Center. We look forward to collaboration among the new position in a complementary way.

We see Electronics and Embedded Systems as essential to controlling the world inside every smart system interacting with the environment. In this position, you will build and lead the electronics and embedded systems research group and provide teaching and education by making clear links with existing activities. The successful candidate should be active in hardware and software research with an application-oriented vision and solid practical first-hand skills in implementing new systems from an idea to a prototype.

The final research profile of the position can be tailored according to your specific expertise.

In general, our tenure track staff are expected to:

  • Pursue and supervise high-quality scientific research in the field.
  • Lead, conduct, and develop research-based teaching, curriculum development, and student supervision.
  • Actively collaborate with local, national, and global research partners.
  • Seek, secure, and manage research funding from national and international sources for your research group.
  • Demonstrate effective academic leadership and engage with external stakeholders.

The specific objectives will be set based on the level and previous experience of the candidate.

REQUIREMENTS

We require:

  • Strong knowledge and first-hand practical background in Electronics and Embedded Systems including computer-aided design of circuits and systems (e.g., microcontrollers, bare metal programming, hardware-software co-design, cyber-physical systems)
  • Strong knowledge and practical expertise of current trends, tools, and methodologies in Electronics and Embedded Systems
  • Ability to teach in the field of Electronics and Embedded Systems (e.g., microcontroller system hardware/software codesign and supporting electronics)
  • Good command of the English language
  • Good cooperation and interaction skills

The following will also be taken into account as advantages in the selection process:

  • Strong industrial collaboration experience, demonstrating the ability to bridge academic and industry perspectives.

We will expect you to demonstrate how your profile aligns with the strategy of Tampere University and with the profile of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences and describe how you would work in a multidisciplinary environment. Ideally, for more senior level appointments, you will have experience of leading or making a major contribution to a research group. Track-record of industry collaboration is considered as an asset.

Further requirements for each tenure track level are as follows:

Assistant Professor

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly activity and potential to pursue scholarly at a high international level
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

Associate Professor

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • a record of independent scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding

Professor

  • an applicable doctoral degree
  • high-level scholarly expertise and an international level of achievement
  • experience of leading scientific research activities
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • a record of winning external research funding
  • a record of international scholarly activity

WE OFFER

Initial appointment for Assistant Professor and for Associate Professor is for five years. Subject to successful performance, you will become a tenured member of the faculty staff at the end of the first five-year period. You will be well supported throughout the five-year period to ease transition to faculty positions. Full Professors will hold a permanent appointment from the outset. Salaries are based on the job demands and employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Collective Agreement for Universities. Typical starting salary range will be from 4,500 to 5,250 EUR/month for an Assistant Professor and from 5,250 to 6,100 EUR/month for an Associate Professor, and from 6,250 to 7,250 EUR/month for a Professor. Higher salaries may be negotiated for candidates with exceptional experience and/or performance.

Tampere University is involved in the Wide bandgap (WBG) pilotline.  Our role focuses on the development and testing of WBG devices and their integration into hybrid System-in-Package (SiP) solutions. The pilot line at Tampere will advance next-generation semiconductor technology with applications in motor control systems, battery management systems, fast charging systems, photovoltaic inverters, power supply systems, and 5G base stations. Additionally, the university is developing techniques for SiP fabrication, enabling the integration and packaging of semiconductor chips into complete systems. 

Furthermore, Tampere University, Tampere City, and Pirkanmaa region have released an initiative with a strong business cluster around wireless communications, intelligent machines, and imaging. Nokia designs the most advanced chips in Europe for 5G on the latest IC technology nodes in Finland, and Industry 4.0 companies have significant potential for custom chips that differentiate and secure competitiveness. To meet industrial challenges, SoC Hub focuses on large, top quality prototype chips in the smallest geometries and aiming at high technology readiness level (TRL6 onwards). The SoC Hub has created a unique co-working model where over 70 experts from the university and companies collaborate daily on SoC design. We use a mix of open source and custom Intellectual Property (IP) blocks and a mixture of open source and commercial EDA tool.
