The research group ISBA (LIDAM, UCLouvain) is looking for a full-time PhD candidate to do research in the field of Actuarial Science under the supervision of Prof. Karim Barigou.

The proposed topic of the PhD focuses on the integration of climate risks into mortality and financial risk modeling in life insurance. The goal of the research is to develop predictive mortality models incorporating climate variables (such as temperature and pollution), to design innovative financial instruments (such as mortality-linked CAT bonds and temperature derivatives), and to analyze the impact of climate risks on financial markets and insurers’ solvency. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining actuarial science, climate science, and financial mathematics. Candidates are welcome to propose related research ideas that align with the supervisor’s expertise.

The PhD candidate will find a dynamic and stimulating working environment, in a research group that is internationally recognized for excellence in actuarial science. Candidates are expected to actively participate in seminars and conferences, to be internationally mobile, and to enroll in our PhD program. Candidates should have a strong interest in actuarial science, climate-related financial risks, and predictive modeling, and should preferably hold a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related field. Students currently in the final year of their Master's program are especially encouraged to apply. Strong analytical skills, motivation for interdisciplinary research, and curiosity are essential.

We offer a full-time position for 2 years, renewable once after positive evaluation. The tentative starting date is September 2025, depending on the availability of the candidate. All the details on how to apply can be found in the attached document.
