Faculty of Education and Psychology is seeking to recruit an Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in  Educational sciences, Individual variability in learning and response to support   starting 1.1.2026, or as soon as possible after that.  

The position of an assistant professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of an associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model at the university of Jyväskylä). At the conclusion of each fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate/full professor).

Understanding learning variability, support and change (ULearn)  is a joint profiling area of the  Faculty of Education and Psychology and the Finnish Institute of Educational Research (FIER). The aim of the profiling is to strengthen the position of the University of Jyväskylä as one of the leading universities in the areas of learning and educational research. Research carried out within the ULearn profiling area is closely linked to the EDUCA flagship and the Centre of Excellence for Learning dynamics and intervention research (Interlearn).  

The position of the Assistant/Associate Professor is part of the focus area “Learning variability within and between individuals” of the profiling area. The focus area develops and investigates approaches to support learning that take into account the diversity of the learners/individuals, acknowledging  individual factors as well as various environmental and contextual influences contributing to learning variability. 


Who we are looking for

The successful candidate will be expected to develop research on individual variability in learning and response to support  , for example, how response to support is linked to cognitive, affective, motivational and environmental factors. The task will also include strengthening the research capacity of the research area and seeking complementary national and international funding (e.g. Academy of Finland, ministries, EU funding). It also includes teaching and the supervision of theses and dissertations. The successful candidate will also be expected readiness to join the interdisciplinary research teams of the Faculty operating in the research area.  

 
The position of Assistant/Associate Professor requires an applicable doctoral degree, excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research, establishing national and international networks, acquiring external funding, and teaching.   

Familiarity with educational and learning environments as well as intervention research will be an asset. Versatile methodological skills related to research in the area, interdisciplinary cooperation, project management, and experience in societal interaction will also be considered an asset. 

The duties and qualification requirements of an Assistant/Associate Professor are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.  Please see the general requirements for appointing an assistant professor or associate professor (tenure track). The qualification requirements should be met before the closing time of this call. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

Please note that candidates applying for the position of Assistant Professor must have completed a doctoral degree within the last nine years. Special circumstances (e.g. parental leave and childcare leave, military service / nonmilitary service, or long-term illness) extend the nine-year rule accordingly.

Salaries are based on job demands and employees’ performance following the Finnish University Salary System. A holiday bonus is paid to all employees. The starting gross salary will be between 4100—4800 EUR/month at the assistant level and between 4700–5500 EUR/month at the associate level depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
