Computer Graphics – Bridging the Real and the Virtual World

The Computer Graphics chair is one of six chairs in the Visual Computing focus area of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The chair is member of the Center for Sensor Systems (ZESS), and closely collaborates with other Visual Computing and Sensorics chairs on questions related to develop and optimize algorithms operating on imagery from various kind of sensor modalities, combing model-driven with data-driven approaches to reach optimal performances for specific applications. The main goal is to bidirectionally link between the real world that is observed via sensors, and the “virtual” world, which represents the real world in a machine-readable way to allow for efficient, automated or semi-automated solutions. One example is the semantic reconstruction of real-world scenes using commodity sensors and camera, yielding insight into the scene’s content, object attributes and human activities. Another example is the optimal design of sensors and sensor data analysis methods by tightly linking, for example, differentiable sensor simulations (i.e., image synthesis) with actual sensor development, resulting in superior overall system performance with efficient use of resources.
