Job description

Brussels offers the advantages of a multicultural capital at the heart of Europe and the comfort of a metropolis on a human scale, 1:20 by train from Paris, 1:30 from Amsterdam, 1h:0 from London and Cologne. Working at ULB means working in a green, lively and stimulating environment. Internationally recognised, ULB covers all university disciplines, closely combining high-quality teaching and cutting-edge research. It organises 40 bachelor's degrees, 150 master's degrees and 3 Erasmus Mundus, more than 65 specialised master's degrees, has 6 Nobel Prize winners and participates in 20 doctoral schools where almost 2,000 doctorates are in progress. ULB is also committed to defending freedoms, independence, and tolerance daily (find out more).

The candidate will carry out teaching and research activities for a period of two years with the possibility for two renewal to complete a doctoral thesis.

The aim of the research project is to use proteomics and metabolomics to decipher the pro- and anti-inflammatory cellular response to contact with myeloperoxidase (MPO). This enzyme is a pro-oxidant enzyme present in the granules of neutrophils, macrophages and in the astrocytes that helps us fight pathogens. Unfortunately, this highly stable, cationic enzyme is found in biological fluids in the event of acute or chronic inflammatory diseases. It then binds to the surface of the cells and encourages the inflammatory response. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry, the aim will be to understand the cellular response in the presence of MPO in models of endothelial cells (cardiovascular diseases) and neuronal cells (Alzheimer's disease).

The candidate will be a member of the pharmacognosy, bioanalysis and Drug Discovery Unit (RD3-PBM), which comprises 4 academics, 4 technicians, 2 post-docs and 8 researchers in various fields. He or she will be trained in the latest research tools, both mass spectrometers and data processing.

The person hired will be required to carry out teaching duties in the ULB Faculty of Pharmacy. These activities will be assigned by the pedagogical coordination committee.

He/she will also be required to carry out various administrative and logistical activities relating to the Research Unit and the Faculty of Pharmacy.
